Intro to Fitness for Men and Women

For obvious reasons, there are differences in men and women. From the exterior to the interior of the individual. Although, we might not like to admit it, there are stereotypes that go along with the different sexes. Some of these different stereotypes have legit standing when it comes to the ways each should exercise and workout.

It is not unheard of for a woman to be able to achieve the same upper body strength as their male counterparts, however it is a harder goal to achieve. This is usually because the male counterparts have the upper hand as they are given a natural advantage over women. In general men are designed to be stronger in the upper body.

The goals of women and men are usually different. For a women it is more common for them to want to be fit in order to look more appealing and sexier. However, in men one might say they have the desire to be fit in order to better show their masculinity. For the most part because of the different goals each has their own target area to focus on. For women, this is usually their tummy, bottom and thighs. Whereas men prefer to have defined abs, arms and back muscles. Typically men focus more on building muscle mass instead of toning their muscles.

Women also have their own advantages when it comes to working out. For example, in general it is easier for a woman to tone some areas, as they are designed to be more flexible. When a woman is doing squats, she does not need to go as low as a man does in order to achieve the same results. Simple modifications for a woman can give her just as good a workout as a man with less effort on her part.

In general it is safe to say the vast majority of men are not nearly as flexible as most woman are. For the most part this I because the joints in women and men are designed lightly different. It is very common for a man to modify or even completely change his warm-up routine, some might say this is due to their “macho nature” making them feel a warm-up is not necessary. Women on the other hand, generally stick to their warm-up routine to ensure they do not become injured.

Men are less likely to try something new, whereas their female counterpart are typically eager to try something new in order to achieve their desired goal. Many women will actually try out new methods to target different areas of their body. For example, pilates and yoga have more women participating than men. Many women are willing to increase their flexibility and fitness through many different methods.

As long as men and women have different goals and find different target areas to be of utmost importance, their exercise regimens will vary. Exercises for building muscle mass will continue to be different as well as the stretching required for each of the sexes. However, both could gain if they would take some pointers of the opposite sex. Combining the two opinions and routines just might prove to be very beneficial for all.

While men and women will continue to lay more importance on some exercise values - and hence routines - than on others, both can benefit by peeking over the fence to see how the other half lives.
